Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Windows, Doors and Air Leaks
- Check the glass for cracks and the screens for tears.
- Make sure caulking around doors and windows is intact; re-caulk if necessary.
- Install storm windows. Check the seal between the frame and the window. If there's a gap, add weather stripping to prevent cold air from rushing in.
- Replace standard curtains with tight sealing, insulated or quilted window coverings.
- Open blinds or drapes on sunny days to let warm sunshine in, and cover windows at night to prevent warm air from leaving the room.
- Check for holes or cracks around your walls, ceilings, windows, doors, plumbing fixtures, switches, electrical outlets, dropped ceilings, recessed lighting, attic entrance, sill plates, water and furnace flues, ducts, chimney flashing, and utility access that can leak cold air into your home. Seal air leaks with caulk or weather stripping.
Gutters
- Check for leaves, acorns and other debris that can cause problems in the winter.
- Inspect the gutters for leaks or damages; repair if necessary.
Insulation
- Check the insulation levels in your attic, exterior and basement walls, ceilings, floors, and crawl spaces. Make sure there's enough to keep warm air from escaping.
Furnaces and Fireplaces
- Clean and replace filters on furnaces.
- Clean warm air registers, baseboards and radiators.
- Install a programmable thermostat to automatically turn your heat down at night or when you are not home.
- If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney flue.
- Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is going.
