Staying Cool in Hot Weather
When the temperature is climbing into the high 80s or 90s, many people would rather sit in the air conditioning than venture outdoors for activities. Use the information below to overcome the tyranny of temperature:
- Consider your fitness level before venturing out in hot weather. It can be dangerous for people with high blood pressure or a heart condition.
- If you are in a rocky area, the rocks may radiate heat, making the temperature warmer. Plan activities in areas that are covered with shade or have fresh water for you to cool off with.
- Drink plenty of water or electrolyte replacement drinks.
- Take opportunities to cool down by jumping into whatever body of water is handy. Periodically dampen a bandanna and wipe your face, neck, and arms.
- If you will be walking or running, bring some sort of treatment for blisters. Heat causes feet to swell and sweat, both of which contribute to blistering.
- Wear clothing that wicks sweat from your skin — a polyester t-shirt, not cotton. Be sure than if you're prone to chafing, you wear shorts that are long enough to prevent it.
