Energy Saving Tips for the Home
An energy efficient home is less costly to operate and more comfortable. The average U.S. household spends about $1,300 per year on energy. Whether your desire to conserve energy comes from a need to reduce costs or a concern for the environment, the tips below can help you get started.
Easy Ways to Save Now
- Check your thermostat. Setting your thermostat lower in the winter and higher in the summer can save you money. Invest in a programmable thermostat compatible with your heating and cooling system and lower or raise your thermostat setting when you will not be home.
- Change your bulbs. Using compact fluorescent bulbs can save you a lot of energy. They provide the same level of lighting but are up to four times more efficient.
- Give the dishwasher a break. Instead of using your dishwasher to dry your dishes, allow them to air dry after the wash cycle.
- Pull the plug. Unplug appliances you seldom use. Appliances in standby mode still use a lot of power.
- Check your water heater.Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.
- Spend less time in the shower. Taking short showers instead of a long shower or bath will save gallons of water.
- Wait to clean. Only wash full loads of dishes and clothes to save water and energy.
Other Energy Saving Tips
- Replace your appliances. Appliances makes up about 20% of your household's energy consumption. If your appliances do not have the Energy Star label, consider purchasing an appliance with this designation. When you shop for a new appliance, the label will tell you the annual energy consumption and operating cost for the appliance.
- Improve insulation. Especially if you live in an older home, consider adding or replacing insulation. One of the best ways to save money over time while increasing the comfort of your home is to insulate your attic.
- Check for air leaks. Periodically check your windows, doors and plumbing for air leaks. Caulk and seal leaks.
- Replace filters. Replace furnace filters monthly or as needed.
- Use your window coverings. During the heating season, keep draperies open on the south facing side of your home to allow sunlight to warm the rooms. At night, close the draperies to prevent chill from cold windows. During the cooling season, keep windows closed during the day to keep sunlight out and cooler air in.
- Use solar energy. Place solar lights along your walkway and entrance to light up your home outside at night for free.
