Spectators at large outdoor stadiums face a growing vulnerability to severe weather due to an increasing size and frequency of sporting events. Before attending the big game, view the tips below to ensure your safety.

  • View weather forecasts before you leave for the stadium. Find out if severe weather may be headed toward the area.
  • Sign up to receive storm reports via your cell phone or PDA. These will alert you of impeding conditions throughout the game.
  • Research the stadium to see what their severe weather policies and procedures are. Find out if they have lightning rods and/or suspended, grounded wires, to protect spectators from lightning.
  • If there is lightning, practice the 30-30 Rule. The first 30 applies to counting the number of seconds between observing a lightning flash and hearing thunder; if the time between the two is 30 seconds or less, lightning is likely within 6 miles of the observed location and you should take shelter immediately. The final 30 refers to waiting 30 minutes after observing the last flash before resuming prior activity. Keep in mind that you may not be able to hear thunder if the crowd is loud.
  • If you are directed to exit the stadium or go to a safe place within the stadium due to severe weather conditions, follow the directions of stadium management, officials or police. Realize that completely exiting the stadium is not always the best option, as you may be caught outdoors, surrounding the stadium, with no shelter.
