Fishing and Hunting
What to Add to the Tackle Box
  • Life Jacket. Make sure each angler, swimmers and non-swimmers alike, wears a life jacket at all times — on the boat, on the dock, or on the shore.
  • Long-handled fish net. This is handy not just for netting fish, but in case you need to reach out to someone in the water. It can also retrieve trash or valuables from the water.
  • First Aid Kit. You should have a kit with medical supplies to deal with the inevitable cuts, scrapes and insect bites. You're likely to be some distance away from professional medical assistance, so be prepared.
  • Cold drinks. Summer temperatures can get pretty warm, so bring lots of cool water. Drink fluids often to prevent dehydration or even heat stroke. (Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages don't count!)
  • Sunscreen. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can do a lot of damage to skin, eyes and lips. Wear proper sunglasses, a hat with a brim, and clothing appropriate to the climate and sun conditions. Avoid fishing in the middle of the day. Use sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher on your face, neck, ears, the back of hands and all other exposed skin. Apply SPF lip protection as well.
  • Insect repellent. Mosquitoes, ticks, bees and other insects not only sting, they can spread disease. Apply insect repellent, following the directions on the container. If your insect repellent contains Deet, apply it to your clothing instead of your skin.
