Hunters Find Success in Rain, Wind

Hunting might not seem like a good activity for a rainy day, but some hunters feel they get the best game during inclement weather.

Not only will you have less competition from other hunters, but the rain can help mask your sound and scent.

  • Deer: Like all wildlife, deer can sense a change in the weather long before we can. They tend to change their bedding areas and eat before, during and after a storm. Hunters who don't mind getting wet can position themselves between bedding areas for a productive hunt.
  • Ducks tend to fly more on windy days. They become uneasy and can be more susceptible to your decoys.
  • Turkeys: Tom turkeys tend to move toward open spaces on rainy days to strut and look for hens. Farm fields, gas line rights of way, pastures and other forest clearings will be especially attractive.
More Tips
  • Tracking becomes more difficult in the rain. Be patient, and pay attention.
  • Use your duck and turkey calls more often during periods of rain and wind, as they will be more difficult to hear. Don't be afraid to use extra volume.
  • Diaphram yelpers and friction calls work well in the rain. Keep them dry inside a plastic bag. Many can even be operated without taking them out of the bag.
  • A tree-mounted umbrella will make you more comfortable in the rain.
  • Bring a few extra changes of clothing to keep in your vehicle.
