Hiking in Rainy Weather
Rainy Conditions can dampen your hiking excursion in more ways than one. Check the weather forecast before heading out. If rain is in the forecast, follow these tips:
- Avoid cotton fabrics. They dry slowly and cling to the body, making you feel colder. Consider a waterproof, breathable jacket and pants.
- Keep your map and compass in a ziplock bag so they remain dry and you can find your way back.
- Wear a good pair of hiking boots that are waterproof.
- Change out of wet clothes as soon as you're done hiking to avoid heat loss due to evaporation.
- Take it slow to avoid falling. Paths may become slick after a rain.
- Carry an extra pair of socks or consider using liner socks. Wet socks contribute to blisters on the feet.
Hot Weather Hiking
- Apply plenty of sunblock and drink lots of water before heading out.
- Wear tops and bottoms that wick moisture away from your body to keep you cooler and wear white or light colored clothing to reflect the suns rays.
- Take it slow and limit how far you plan to hike. Be flexible if other members in your hiking team need to take a break or move more slowly.
- Avoid over-exertion./li>
- Pack sports drinks. Sports drinks replenish sodium and electrolytes lost from sweating.
- After hiking, continue to drink plenty of liquids to rehydrate.
