Biking in Rainy Weather

Biking on wet ground can be dangerous but there are a few things you can do to ensure a safe ride.

  • Wear bright yellow or orange so you are visible to others on the road.
  • Install reflectors or lights on your bicycle.
  • Wear a visor under your helmet to keep rain out of your eyes.
  • Allow plenty of stopping distance. If your rims and pads are wet, it may take a while to brake. If your brakes begin to slow you too quickly, loosen your grip to prevent skidding.
  • Keep your tires a little under-inflated so you can increase contact with the road.
  • When it first begins to rain, dirt and oil on the roadway will make conditions more slick. Use caution.
  • Consider installing fenders on your bicycle to keep rain and dirt off you and your bike.
Biking in Hot Weather
  • Before you go for your ride, drink plenty of water and pack up a water bottle. Also apply plenty of sunblock.
  • Wear tops and bottoms that wick moisture away from your body to keep you cooler.
  • Avoid overexertion.
  • Make sure other vehicles can see you. Bright glare can make visibility difficult in daylight hours./li>
Biking in Cooler Weather
  • Where multiple thin layers clothing to keep you warm. Where a weather resistant jacket to keep wind out.
  • Wear wind and rain resistant pants over another layer.
  • Keep your hands warm with a pair of gloves.
