Starting a new exercise plan can be exciting. Whether you are planning to exercise to improve your health, lose weight or enjoy the outdoors, you can make the most of your experience with the tips below.
Getting Geared Up
- Wear appropriate footwear for your activity type and body type. Runners require different shoes than those who will be walking or biking. Shoe stores that specialize in athletic shoes can help you determine the proper footwear for your activity and gait.
- Choose workout wear that absorbs sweat and removes it from your skin.
- Don't forget protective gear. Helmets are a must for biking, knee and elbow pads for skating.
- Prepare for any outdoor condition. Make sure you have reflective clothing for evening workouts; sunglasses and sunscreen for sunny workouts.
Know Your Health
Always check with a doctor before starting a workout program, especially if you have a heart condition, feel pain in your chest during exertion, have a bone or joint problem or take blood pressure medication.
Once you are exercising, your body may give you cues that it is time to stop or take a break. If you experience any of these symptoms, slow down and let your heart rate slow down gradually. If symptoms are severe, stop immediately and seek help.
- Experience pain or pressure in the left or middle part of your chest, left side of your neck, left shoulder or left arm.
- Suddenly break out in a cold sweat.
- Feel dizzy or sick to your stomach.
- Notice your heart is racing or beating irregularly.
- Have muscle cramps.
- Feel sharp pain in your joints, feet, or bones.
When starting an exercise plan, always take it slow and work yourself up to a higher level of fitness. Drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of rest and eat healthy foods.
